How To Clean Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes. We all have them, but how often do we clean them. So what, if they still work why bother clean them right? WRONG.

Having clean tools is just as important as prepping our skin before applying our makeup. After every use skin cells, bacteria and old makeup residue is left behind on the bristles. Not only will this affect the next makeup application, but it will cause skin irritation and break-outs in the long run.

What you need:

  • Warm water.
  • Baby shampoo/ mild shampoo.
  • Clean towel.

What to do:

  • Wet the brush in the warm water.
  • Apply a small amount of shampoo into the bristles and massage through the ends, making sure not to get water too far up the handle of the brush.
  • Rinse and repeat if water does not run clear.
  • Gently squeeze out the bristles using the towel until bristles are damp and not wet.
  • Leave in a clean dry place to air dry.

What NOT to do:

  • Do not immerse the brush in water and leave to steep overnight. This will affect the glue that holds the bristles together.
  • Do not rub the brush vigorously against the towel.
  • Do not leave to dry on top of a radiator. The heat will melt the glue in the handle and ruin the brush. Room temperature is just fine.

This method of brush cleaning works perfectly for both synthetic and natural fibre brushes. Natural bristles are a little more delicate and can dry out if harsh chemicals are used on them. Synthetic brushes are a little hardier and can withstand use of store-bought brush cleaning solutions.

For those who like to apply liquid foundation with their hands, make sure to wash your hands before each application.
