Beginners Guide To Contouring & Highlighting

Before you start contouring you need to find your face shape, there are many different face shapes but the 6 most common ones are: Oval, Long, Square, Round, Heart and Triangle, but you can also be a combination of these shapes so take your time and look hard to find out which one you are:

Once you find what face shape you are the next thing is to contour your face. The aim of contouring is to make the bone structure behind the face stand out. If you apply a bronzer or foundation in a darker colour than the skin this will create a shadow and give some warmth to the face (blending the darker colour will take practice as it should look natural) . A lighter colour than the skin is used to make areas of the face appear raised, the combination of the shaded and highlighted areas create an illusion of cheekbones, slimmer neck line etc..

1. The dark areas

The general areas you want to darken are the line under you cheekbones, the area around your hairline, your jawline and the sides of your nose up into the creases of your eyes.

2. If you have dark skin
Concentrate on highlighting more than deepening the shadows of your face. Since a dark skin tone already plays up the shadowy areas, highlighting is the key to contouring for you.

3. The light areas
The places to hit with a lighter shade are under the eyes, in the flat area in the center of your forehead, the center of your chin and the strip down the middle of your nose.

4. Blend, blend , blend
Remember the aim is for the contouring to look natural so blend any harsh lines. I'd recommend using a small stippling brush and take your time.

5. Think Matte
For exaggerating shadows. In other words the areas you want to recede, you want to keep shimmer free.

6. And think shimmer
For highlighting, sparkle will draw attention, which is why it's good for high points you want to make pop.
